(From Auckland
Airport)
I am a fully mobile navigator thanks to Sally and Expedition. I am sitting at the airport with my
“fully loaded” laptop. I have Expedition, a GPS for the laptop, an ensemble of
the latest weather grib files, downloaded this morning and performance polars
for Dreamcatcher.
The models all agree that we should have a pretty tame trip
for the 1300 odd miles back to Auckland,
roughly 10 days sailing if nothing changes.
We will stay in touch via Satphone, texts and HF radio as
available/suitable. I will be in touch with Sally, giving us her professional
advice and keeping our position updated.
I am quite excited to have this opportunity to practice with
Expedition in an autonomous “mobile environment” and getting the weather grib
files from different sources and different providers . It has been fun for me to
get used to the weather and optimizing features of Expedition, its been much
easier, but more interesting than I expected, actually might be getting
addicted to getting the different models and running different optimizations,
getting the results etc.
One of my goals is to get better at the IT (stuff I normally
delegate to Sally) side of sailing, (and
life) and to be more in touch, particularly offshore, so thats my goal for this
trip.
