Let the guessing begin

7 days to the Coastal Classic, the biggest race of the year for many Auckland sailors. Westhaven is buzzing with chat on who is going, and who has new sails/rigs/other improvements. And starting today 7 days out the talk will always drift to the weather.

So what is the weather going to be like? Well actually looking at the models today the current forecast is for a dream run of winds between 10 – 15 knots from the south, then in the early morning turning east. Little could make the race faster! The wind behind us up the coast, then as we turn to head into the Bay of Islands the wind changes to be behind us again.

These are the very conditions that enabled race record times to be recorded in 1996.

For Coppelia, two handed,  downwind conditions are great for getting there fast but maybe not for a good result. However, every boat has it’s day!

This weekend we have boat work. Rob has replaced the bilge pumps last night. On Saturday we are changing from our furling cruising forestay and furler  to a one designed for racing, we hope this will make getting the jib up easier. On my list the weekend, is to secure all the ports on the PC and make ready for sea. I will also spend sometime refreshing my mind on the course.
