SITREP 22:00 FEB 11

Please forgive our lack of comms, we have both been trying to settle into the routine of being at sea again. We are currently two sail reaching under Jib Top (my favorite sail). We started yesterday at 12:30 and had a straight forward exit from Mangonui. We passed North Cape just before dark and Reginga in the pitch black. While the conditions here on the west coast are settled, the transistion from the shelter of the North Island into the southerly swell in shallow water made for steep and confused seas. Neither of us lost out lunch but for me there was potential.

Today we tacked early on to starboard and have been reaching in 6-25 knots, under no 2, no 1, code ero and now JT. The only incident of the day was the lashing at the head of the zero breaking and we spent the best part of 1/2 hour repairing it. This morning I was lucky enough to see a blue whale heading north close to our line, it was like a moving island.

Making great progress down the coast, thou both of us a mindful of how things change in this part of the world, and remember sailing in similar air 3 years ago then having to head the boat dead downwind and take the main down when the wind increased to 50 knots. We are happy but cautious.
