White Island Race – alternative course

Tomorrow Friday 10am is the start of our  last race over night race before  the Round New Zealand race. Due to the lost containers from the grounded ship Rena, the race committee have wisely organised an alternative course.

The course is:

Start Orakei Wharf

North of Channel Island ( between Great barrier Island and Coromandel)

Cuvier Island – 30 nm east of Coromandel

East of Great Barrier Island

Round the Poor Knights Islands

West of Sail Rock

Finish

The weather: It is not looking that friendly!

A low round 50 South, has sent a front over Auckland this morning. For the race a tight gradient of pressure exists over the race course, between this low and the high in the Tasman, bringing winds of 30 knots average, so gusts of 45 knots. The wind direction is also likely to cause the formation of a low level jet in the Colville channel, with winds in excess of 60 knots. Our plan will be sail conservatively enough to prevent gear damage.
