This weekend we race the “long course” in this years’ Simrad series. Shown below is the first choice course and it is a longer course at 128nm than SSANZ has had for some years. (There is a shorter alternate course if weather is unsuitable)
The longer course will challenge some. Colville Channel will challenge us all. The Hauraki Gulf is bounded by the biggest hills in town, Coromandel, Great Barrier and (the higher) Little Barrier. These hills always have a huge influence over local weather. So there will definitely be a few changes in the wind!
Tidal currents will be a big factor across the course too. The lower right of the picture shows the tide graph for Saturday, high tide in Auckland is at 09:37. If we are lucky we will get through Colville channel before the tide turns against us..
