This weekend – well actually Thursday to Monday, Rob and I, along with 9 other crews raced from Auckland to the Three Kings (50 nautical miles north of the North Island) and return, a total course length of ~480 nautical miles.
The raced turned out to be one of the hardest races Rob and I ever done. A combination of the race being the longest “weekend” race we have sailed, high sea state and very low wind speed, made testing conditions for even the most long standing crews. The good news is we passed (with flying colours I might add), working hard through each of episodes of pure bad luck, to finish 3rd on line and 5th on PHRF overall. We were the only 2-handed crew to complete the course.
A longer report to come, when I find my camera!
For me the adventure continues this weekend with the Flying Fifteen North Island Championship at Gulf Harbour, followed by the Auckland Champs / Sail Akarana two weeks away. Teams from all over New Zealand will be competing in these events and will be bit of test for Neil and I to decide if we want to step up and start a very intensive build up to the 2013 British National Champs and then later in the year the World Championship in Honk Kong. With the 2017 World Champs likely to be in Napier, if we are turn our dream of a top 15 finish to reality, the hard work needs to start soon.
Sail Hard!
