Bringing home Pinky’s Pot and other adventures

Just like the Ranfurly Shield, Pinky’s Pot – awarded the most successful Flying 15 fleet at each national championship, is  hotly contested between Auckland and Canterbury. This year Auckland finally turned the tide and ended the South Island hold on the trophy.

The 50th Flying Fifteen National Championship and world selection trials were held at the Nelson Yacht Club over the last few days. For Neil and it was the first real outing in our new boat “the Godffather”.  My plan was to stay well clear of the other boats – in the last two nationals I have had damage and to try and do better than our 6th place last year.

P2050537 Another hard day for Neil at the front of the boat.

Wind conditions varied from very light, to well medium (30+knots). Neil was so happy with our performance in the stronger winds and the very fast downwind legs that we experienced on Monday.  Our results were a combination of a great new boat, and some very good new kite sheets made by Rob.

We ended the regatta in 5th, 1 point behind 4th place,  firmly qualifying us for the world championships in Hong Kong.

Today Rob starts the Nolex 22 nationals at Plimmerton.
