the Godffather

Neil and I finally put our new boat “the Godfather” in the water yesterday. Neil did the honours of covering it in bubbly and we went racing. It is pretty exciting to have the newest and hopefully fastest boat in the fleet.

Neil and I started sailing flying 15 in 2006. We had an agreement if we had a top 10 finish at the NZ National Champs we were allowed to buy a new boat (at that stage new to us - second hand). Our last 3 years results have been a 8 – 7 – 6,  so while I was busy getting ready to sail Round New Zealand, Neil was busy sorting out a new boat. We decided on an 2012 Ovington mark 10 carbon fibre epoxy boat which was built for us in the UK and fitted by Allan Bax.

Allan made ordering the boat very easy, while Mark at Burnard International made the shipping a very simple process.

We have a few little “tweaks” to make, but still came home with a 2 & 3 yesterday.

The boat is named the Godffather after my late godfather Frank Gimpson, who said people these days spent too much money on things like cars and houses and not enough money of boats and adventure.

On Saturday at 4:30pm we are having drinks at the RAYC, you are all most welcome to come down and  join us and have a look at the boat. I will post some more photos later in the week.
