Gold Cup 1

P9210755

Things were a little different this weekend, for the first time ever Rob and I were joined by another shipmate for racing (hence lots more photos). The intrepid David Johns joined us for a very lumpy sail round Waiheke.

The other unusual event was watching live streamed TV of the America’s Cup on our navigation PC before the start.

We started and sailed on the wind in lumpy waves giving me some much required time on the helm in these conditions.

David then took the handle bars for the reach through to Gannet Rock  and “blast”  into the Waiheke Channel.

We were able to hoist our “whale catcher” kite (name because it is made so strongly we both believe you could land a whale with it with out damage to this kite) for the short run along the eastern side of Waiheke, before returning to 2 sails for the reach home.

We then braced for a very rough motor home, pausing our traditional hot meal after the finish till we made it into Gulf Harbour. Thankfully it was not that bad, making the day most pleasant.

Next race day is October 12, before then both of us have other sailing commitments, Rob competing in the Barefoot and Thompson 2 handed series, while I am retuning to my one-design roots and racing in a Platu 25 regatta. We both have a few boat jobs to complete, as we will be focussed on a good result in the race to the Duke of Marlborough on  October 23rd!
